- Synopsis (Source: MAL):
On August 10th of the year 2010 the Holy Empire of Britannia began a campaign of conquest, its sights set on Japan. Operations were completed in one month thanks to Britannia's deployment of new mobile humanoid armor vehicles dubbed Knightmare Frames. Japan's rights and identity were stripped away, the once proud nation now referred to as Area 11. Its citizens, Elevens, are forced to scratch out a living while the Britannian aristocracy lives comfortably within their settlements. Pockets of resistance appear throughout Area 11, working towards independence for Japan. Lelouch, an exiled Imperial Prince of Britannia posing as a student, finds himself in the heart of the ongoing conflict for the island nation. Through a chance meeting with a mysterious girl named C.C., Lelouch gains his Geass, the power of the king. Now endowed with absolute dominance over any person, Lelouch may finally realize his goal of bringing down Britannia from within!- Personal Thoughts (probably will be biased and has a bad quality, you have been warned):
First things first, i'll ask, have you watch this? No? Stop reading, and go watch this. Seriously, just go and watch this. Sure there's mecha, but don't let your biased opinions of them stop you from watching this great work and who knows, you might have a new way of looking mecha shows. Alright, shoo, go watch this, shoo. Now that's out of the way, basically the story follows along Lelouch, the prince of Britannia that for his own reasons hated his country and wanted to destroy it. So he leads the rebellions which is later known as the Order of the Black Knights to fight against Britannia in area 11 or formerly known as Japan. Despite being overwhelmingly outnumbered, Lelouch managed to win times and times with his tactics and manipulation from his Geass, a strange supernatural ability granted by the mysterious seemingly immortal C.C. his geass allowed him to control anyone to do one command of his, one and only one. Although apparently this can be abused if you choose your words correctly. For example rather than "tell me, (insert a question here)" it's better to say "answer my questions". Yeah, there's loopholes everywhere in that ability that one can take advantage of. The rebellion soon escalated further when the Black Knights grows in strength and manage to rally up supporters to overthrow Britannia which will end up to a full scaled war.
Order of the Black Knights |
For the main cast, we have our two main character, Lelouch Lamperogue or Lelouch V. Britannia and Kururugi Suzaku. The former is more well known as Zero, the leader of the rebellion group, orders of the black knights. Sadly, he was, or he is the prince of Britannia who is now seeking to ally with Japan to destroy Britannia. On the other hand, we have the son of the former prime minister's (maybe prime minister.. if not, he's somewhere up there) son, Kururugi Suzaku that allied himself with the Britannia to change them from within and free Japan by raising up the ranks. These two different point of view inevitably leads to them clashing in battles despite those two being good friends with each others. For the other casts... well, there's Nunnally, Lelouch's sister, C.C the mysterious girl who grants Lelouch his geass, and so on so forth. There's a ton of characters in this series and unfortunately they didn't dive in too much to them, not that it's that necessary though.
Lelouch vi Britannia A.K.A Zero |
There's a lot of Suzaku hater but to be honest, I quite like his character |
For the animation quality, as expected from the veteran of mecha genre, Sunrise, to do extremely good with it. I would even consider the animation quality to be quite decent in today's standard. There's one thing that bugs me, that is the artstyle, well, the artist is CLAMP so i wouldn't be surprised that the artstyle is like that, but personally i would prefer they use Gundam's artstyle for the humans though.
Just look at those skinny arms and legs |
- Verdict:
I simply love this series and this one is one of the most rewatched series i have. Yeah, i rewatch this quite a bit. So, for the verdict, this series is good with it's story and battle tactics with good animations. There are issues regarding its massive cast and them being underdeveloped but i'm sure we can look pass that. Also, i do need to mention that the ending is really good, seriously, it stirred up my emotions. Anyway, Lelouch V. Britannia commands you to watch thisLelouch vi Britannia commands you to watch this! |
