Synopsis (Source: MAL):

Hirasawa Yui, a young, carefree girl entering high school, has her imagination instantly captured when she sees a poster advertising the "Light Music Club." Being the carefree girl that she is, she quickly signs up; however, Yui has a problem, she is unable to play an instrument. When Yui goes to the club room to explain, she's greeted by the other members: Ritsu, Mio, and Tsumugi. Although disheartened at Yui's lack of musical know-how, they still try to convince her to stay to prevent the club's disbandment. After playing Yui a short piece which re-ignites her imagination, they succeed in keeping their new member and guitarist. Along with the tasks of school and homework, Yui begins to learn the guitar with the help of the other band members, experiencing many mishaps along the way. However, with the school festival drawing near and Yui getting stuck with her practice, will the Light Music Club be ready in time for their debut?

Personal Thoughts (probably will be biased and has a bad quality, you have been warned):

How to summarize K-On! in one sentence? Light Music Club members that hardly play any music. Yes, that's how to summarize this series. The story focuses on Hirasawa Yui who joined the light music club because she thinks it's easy (it's not) and decided to learn to play a guitar. To be honest, there's hardly any plot progression at all in the series. Yes, they graduated in the end but still, not much story to be said. But is this lack of story a downside for this series? Of course not. A comedy series doesn't need that much story to begin with anyway. Other than that, the main charm of this series is the light-hearted tone and happy character interaction. It's a series that you watch to relax.
Yeah, music...

For the characters though, it's your usual KyoAni character design. Seriously, if you watch a lot of anime, you'll know the KyoAni character designs. Back to the series, K-On! has 5 main characters with various side ones. The characters are easily memorable and quite interesting and fun in their own way. Airhead Hirasawa Yui, shy Akiyama Mio, the useless leader Tainaka Ritsu, the rich ojou-sama Kotobuki Tsumugi, the dependable kouhai Nakano Azusa (A.K.A Azunyan). My favourite is by far Azunyan because well.. obviously she's the cutest of them all, for me at least.
Yep, Azunyan is cute

As this is a series from KyoAni, the animation quality is obviously good even though they have a somewhat simplistic artstyle. Don't think badly of the artstyle, it suits this series really well. Also as a series which focuses on music (not really), the musics are quite good albeit having weird lyrics. Just search for Gohan wa Okazu, you'll know what I meant.

Try doing this

- Verdict:

Now ask yourself something first before considering to watch this. Do you want a series with a deep story or something to sit back and relax to? If it's the former, look for something else. But if you want the latter, by all means try out k-on. It's not great but I must say it'll help you to relax.
